GHS PictogramGHS refers to the new global standard for the classification and labelling of chemicals. It has been designed with the central purpose of creating a unified framework for the identification of potentially dangerous hazards so they can be readily recognised and avoided. Since the 1st June 2015, new regulations have come into force which have created a new set of challenges for companies who are currently utilising more traditional thermal transfer solutions for GHS compliance.  With the new guidelines, manufacturers of chemicals must utilise GHS-compliant labels for both their newly produced and stocked products. The new labels must be able to meet strict criteria regarding the labels durability and resistance to chemicals, fading and smudging. Any significant deviance from these requirements will not be BS5609 compliant. The old style haz-chem “Chip” symbols cannot be used anymore since under new regulations, the number of pictograms has to be equal to the number of hazards. No blanks or extra pictograms are allowed. So how can companies produce BS5609 compliant labels on demand and cost-effectively? The answer is simple; print your own colour labels in house! Why print your own GHS labels? The chemical industry is a multi-billion pound business. However, due to the highly technical nature of both meeting and maintaining GHS compliance, mistakes are often easy to make, especially when label design and production are outsourced to a third party. It is understandable for companies to want to streamline as many processes as possible, but when there are serious financial penalties for improper labelling practices, or even worse, risking human life, it makes more sense to take full responsibility for your GHS labels. By making the decision to print your own labels in house, you gain a far more granular level of control over the whole compliance process. If there are any regulatory changes, instead of going through a lengthy and ultimately costly product recall and reprinting procedure, you instead just simply update your label design from your own computer and reprint your labels both quickly and cost-effectively. A Printer to Meet Your Requirements Naturally, each company has unique requirements when it comes to labelling.
