Glossary Term Definition
UCC Uniform Code Council - formerly the Uniform Product Code Council. The organization that administers the UPC and other retail standards.
UCC.EAN-128 Code 128 with a Function 1 character in the first position that is the symbology used with the UCC.EAN format for a universal product number (UPN);(See Code 128).
UCS Universal Communications Standard; used in the Retail industry to communicate commercial information between supplier and vendor.
UDP (USER DATAGRAM PROTOCOL) UDP/IP is a connection-less protocol that describes how messages reach application programs running in the destination machine; provides low overhead and fast response and is well suited for high-bandwidth applications.
UK PLESSEY CODE See Plessey Code.
ULTRACODE Developed by Zebra Technologies a 2D symbol composed of a variable-length strip of pixel columns with non-critical widths. The code supports numeric and alphanumeric modes, black/white and higher data density colored printing. A low linear precision os required when printing.
ULTRA-HIGH FREQUENCY TAGS RFID systems that operate at multiple frequencies, including 868 MHz (in Europe), a band centered at 915 MHz, and 2.45 GHz (microwave). Read range is typically 3 to 10 feet (1 to 3 meters), but systems operating in the 915 MHz band may achieve read ranges of 20 feet (6 meters) or more.
UMTS Universal Mobile Telecommunications System. Third generation, broadband, packet based telecommunication up to 2 Mbps. Seen as the future of mobile communications.
UNIT OF USE A packaging level containing the quantity of the item that is to be administered to a patient in a healthcare facility.
UNIVERSAL PRODUCT NUMBER (UPN) A number that uniquely and unambiguously identifies a healthcare product at each packaging level. It is actually a U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) term for the HIBCC and UCC.EAN bar code on medical and surgical products.
UPC Universal Product Code is the standard bar code symbol for retail food packages in the United States. This code was modified and adapted by Europe for international identification of food packages in the form of EAN.
UPC-A UPC-A is the most common bar code used in retail today. It is a numeric, fixed ratio bar code with 12 characters.
UPC-E A UPC symbol encoding six digits of data in an arrangement that occupies less area than a UPC-A symbol. Also called “zero suppressed” symbol because a 10-digit UPC-A code can be compressed to a six digit UPC-E format by suppressing redundant zeros.
USS Uniform Symbol Specification. The current series of symbology specifications published by AIM; currently includes USS-I 2/5, USS-39, USS-93, USS-Codabar and USS-128.
