Glossary Term Definition
EAN European Article Numbering and EAN International abbreviation. It refers to the bar code symbology used for the marking of consumer products in accordance with EAN specifications.
EAN-8 EAN-8 has a left-hand guard pattern, four odd parity digits, a center guard pattern, four even parity digits, and a right hand guard pattern with a total of eight symbols.
EAN-13 EAN-13 has 13 characters or symbols. It is very much like the UPC code and has the 13th character as a means of identifying in what country the product will be used.
EAN-128 Developed to provide a worldwide format and standard for exchanging common data between companies, this symbology encodes data in a structured way that also provides information about what that data represents, such as a currency value, weight or volume. The symbology used it Code 128, the additional structure is defined by the UCC/EAN associations.
EAN/U.P.C. A fixed-length, numeric 13-digit bar code symbol consisting of 30 dark elements and 29 intervening light elements. Each character is represented by 2 bars and 2 spaces over 7 modules. A bar may be comprised of 1, 2, 3 or 4 modules. Each EAN/U.P.C. symbol consists of a leading quiet zone, a start pattern, 7 left-hand data characters, a center bar pattern, 5 right-hand data characters, a Modulo 10 check character, a stop pattern and a trailing quiet zone. U.P.C. is often considered a 12-digit code. The 13th digit of EAN/U.P.C. symbol is a derived character in the left-most position. In the case of U.P.C., this derived left-most character is a 0.
EAS Electronic Article Surveillance - primarily the use of RF tags as a deterrent to theft in the retail industry.
EDGE Enhanced Data for GSM Evolution is currently being standardized within the European Telecommunications Standards Institute and represents the final evolution of data communications within the GSM standard. EDGE uses a new modulation scheme to enable data throughput speeds of up to 384kbit/s using existing GSM infrastructure.
EDGE ROUGHNESS Irregularities in the printing of bar code elements, resulting in a non-uniform edge and edge errors.
EDI Electronic Data Interchange: An intercompany, computer-to-computer communication of data that permits the receiver to perform the function of a standard business transaction in a standard data format.
EDI MESSAGE DATA The data communicated between business trading partners in a standard format and syntax (i.e., ANSI ASC X.12 or UN/EDIFACT).
EHIBCC The European Health Industry Business Communications Council (EHIBCC) was established in The Netherlands for administration and maintenance of the Health Industry Bar Code Supplier Labeling Standard as well as the Labeler Identification Codes issued in Europe.
ELECTRONIC PRODUCT CODE (EPC) An identification standard created by the Auto-ID Center that provides additional information to existing bar codes. The EPC can identify manufacturers, product categories, and individual items. See also Auto-ID Center and Bar Code.
ELEMENT A single bar or space.
ENCRYPTION Entails scrambling and coding information, typically with mathematical formulas called algorithms, before the information is transmitted over a network.
EPC DISCOVERY SERVICE A service from the EPC global Network that allows companies to search for every reader that has read a particular EPC tag. See also EPC global.
