Stock Control Software
Stock control software is widely used across manufacturing, distribution and retail and in any situation where stock needs to be tracked by quantity, location and value etc. Stock control software is essential for being able to manage stock levels and for ensuring that the value of stock is kept to a minimum, without running out.

Stock control software comes in many forms, including:
- As part of an MRP (material requirement planning) system
- As part of a warehouse management system
- As part of a dedicated application such as van sales
- As part of an EPOS (electronic point of sale) system
- As a stand alone, dedicated stock control system / program

The stock control system is based on each type of product having a unique part number. These can be made up of several fields, defining the product type and sub type. A stock control system would typically have the following functions:- Tracking of products by location, quantity, value, supplier, lead time and product type etc
- Booking in and out
- Suggest purchase order when product quantity reaches preset minimum level
- Comprehensive reports
- Stock take facility, possibly using a handheld computer
- Variance reports (products where the stock take figure doesn't match the stock quantity)
- Perpetual inventory, where a several items are counted each day or week, so the whole stock is counted over a pre-define period
The stock take function of the stock control system would be carried out most efficiently using barcode labels. These barcodes can either be on the product or on a shelf edge or bin. The barcode can then be scanned by a hand held terminal and the quantity entered manually via the keyboard.
It is possible to link stock control software to accounts packages such as sage and Pegasus. At the simplest level, the accounts package can import or export part numbers and descriptions to and from the stock control software via a text file or an ODBC interface. With additional dedicated software, stock control transactions carried out using the stock control software can be passed to the accounts package for invoicing. One of the most important items of information produced by the stock control software is the end of month stock value, which would be used by the accounts package to produce the profit and loss report.
