Asset Tracking
Asset tracking is the ability to know where your assets are located at any point in time. An asset could range from a computer to products on a delivery lorry.

An example of where asset tracking could be used is in a tool hire company. Tools are bar coded and set against a person or location so that the company can track where their tools are and when the tools are due back. Other examples include:
- PAT testing your electrical equipment
- Removals
- Security, cash in transit
- Rental services, goods on hire, short-term hire
Why track your assets?
It is important to track your assets to ensure that valuable assets are not getting removed from your workplace and to track where items are from day to day for staff requirements.
The complete asset tracking solution will enable you to quickly and easily track your assets, calculate depreciation for financial records and using the audit facility you can perform a regular check that your assets are at your specified location, if any are missing and report on the findings.
What do you need to get started?
To effectively track your assets dependent on the extent of your application you will require some or all of the following products:
- Bar code printer
- Handheld computer
- Asset tracking software
- Asset labels & ribbons
- Training & installation
Bar code printer
Choosing a printer for your asset labels depends on the size of label you wish to print and the volume of labels you will be printing. For most asset applications a desktop to medium volume printer will suit. A printer can be bought for as little as £220 excluding VAT.
It’s important that your printer is maintained through regular cleaning, in the first year your printer will be covered by a return to base warranty. AM Labels can fix ad hoc breakdown repairs or cover your printer with an onsite maintenance contract with timed response for more vital applications.
Handheld computers
Handheld computers can be used to track your assets or complete an audit by scanning bar coded asset labels in conjunction with the asset tracking software. Handheld computers are available for many environments including retail, warehouses, healthcare and out in the field.
Asset tracking software
Asset labels can be tracked using a database set up by yourself (or your company) or through specialised asset tracking software. PASS software will allow you to track assets, calculate depreciation and complete auditing tasks. The main features of the software are:
- Assets can be tracked by asset type, building, location, user and supplier
- User friendly program with extensive use of drop down lists and other time saving features
- Audit facility using low cost handheld computer
- Password security
- Reporting facility where you can draw conclusions from your data
Asset Labels
Asset labels can be printed on a variety of materials dependent on your needs, the standard labels are polyester which once applied is difficult to remove. There are also higher strength adhesives available for textured surfaces. Tamper evident label material leaves the word "VOID" on the surface if the label is removed after application. Self Destruct Tamper resistant material breaks up as you try to remove it.
If you only need a small amount of asset labels AM Labels can provide you with pre-printed asset labels containing your company logo and serialised numbers either text or bar coded as required. If you have an ongoing need to track assets then it may be worth investing in a label printer, labels & ribbons to print your own asset labels.
Training and Installation
AM Labels can provide training and installation of the asset tracking products to complete the solution. Training can be carried out on using the printer, maintaining the printer, and using the software.
