Labelling Explained

What is labelling?

Labelling is the process of printing and applying labels to your products. This can be completed using a label printer, label software and labels. The labels can either be applied to the products by hand for small quantities or with an applicator for large quantities.

For example in retail bar coded labels are applied to products so that they can be scanned at the checkout to take them out of stock and to charge the customer. In many industries address labels are used on envelopes for mailing documentation out to customers.

Why label your products?

Labelling your products with bar code labels will enable you to perform a level of stock control. This can be completed by scanning the products when despatched or received into excel or customised software. Labels can also be used for asset tracking to track your assets and their location with bar coded or numbered labels. For example in a hire company the assets are the products that are being hired to customers.

Labels & ribbons

Labels can be made in many formats depending on how you wish to use them. There are a different range of materials available appropriate to your application. Labels are typically supplied with permanent adhesive so that they can’t be removed. Labels are also available with removable adhesive so that they can be easily removed and thrown away or reused on another item.

Labels for thermal printers are either direct thermal or thermal transfer. Direct thermal labels use heat sensitive paper to produce black text, barcodes & images. The print lasts 6 - 12 months before fading unless exposed to direct sunlight. Thermal Transfer labels use standard paper or synthetic labels with an ink ribbon to produce a permanent print.

Paper labels are typically used for address labels, shipping labels and product labels where the label will not be exposed to consistent wet environments. Synthetic labels such as polyester and polyethylene labels can be used for sticking to products in an outdoor environment. Also for labels that need to be applied for a lengthy period of time such as asset labels on a computer.

Laser or inkjet printers use labels that are supplied on A4 pages with the labels cut out to your size or a standard size. For thermal printers, AM Labels can produce your labels to a specific size or there are a wide range of stock sizes to choose from.
