Depending on what material you are printing onto thermal ribbons fall into the following categories:

Wax - Most popular with some smudge resistance. Suitable for matt and semi gloss paper labels.
Resin enhanced wax – provides a better print quality than wax offering more smudge resistance. Suitable for matt and semi gloss paper labels.
Wax / Resin - Smudge resistant. Suitable for semi gloss paper and some synthetic labels.
Resin - Scratch and chemical resistant. Suitable for coated synthetic label.
