Direct Thermal

Relies on heat sensitive label and therefore has a much more limited range of materials. The print on direct thermal materials will fade in time, with coated materials being more resistant to fading than the standard uncoated versions.

Thermal Transfer

This method of printing uses an ink ribbon and has the widest choice of label materials (and adhesives) and includes a very wide choice of all the material mentioned above.

Choice of matt and gloss paper materials available, but a limited choice of synthetic materials and adhesives. Some synthetic materials will melt or deform with the heat from a laser printer.

Choice of matt or gloss paper and a very limited choice of synthetic materials. The gloss paper tends to be rather expensive and the ink from inkjet printers will fade if exposed to direct sunlight (UV).
