What is a barcode font?
Barcodes appearing on labels are traditionally created using labelling software such as Bartender, Zebra Designer or Nice Label. These applications are extremely capable but require a significant up front investment and possibly followed by training from the supplier . One alternative to labelling applications is to utilise barcode fonts.
How does a barcode font work?
Barcode fonts are true type fonts which work in the same way as any other true type font (e.g Arial and Times New Roman) that you would use in a windows application. However, with a barcode font the information you key in is displayed as a barcode.
For simple barcodes such as Code 128 or Code 39, data can simply be typed into your application and it will be rendered as your barcode of choice.
For more complicated barcodes such as EAN 13, which utilise elements such as guard bars and check digits, a middleware application such as the Wasp Fontware is needed to render the data provided as a barcode. Such programs are generally included with the more complicated fonts and require the user to enter the data into the application which will then output the relevant barcode, which can then be copied into your windows application.
