| Glossary Term | Definition |
| EPC INFORMATION SERVICE | A network infrastructure of the EPC Network that allows companies to store EPC data in secure databases on the Web. Companies can set the level of information access for different types of organizations, from supply chain providers to manufacturers, to everyone. |
| EPCGLOBAL | A non-profit organization with the mission of commercializing EPC technology. The Uniform Code Council and EAN International, which set and maintain bar code standards in North America and internationally, set up EPC global. |
| EPCGLOBAL NETWORK | The Internet-based technologies and services designed for EPCs. |
| ERP | Enterprise Resource Planning – a term used to describe a new wave of integration system software capabilities designed to link a company’s respective operations—including human resources, financials, manufacturing, and distribution—with their customers and suppliers. |
| ERROR CORRECTION | A reader or decoder's use of mathematical schemes to reconstruct or replace damaged or missing symbol characters to enable the reading of the symbol data. |
| ERROR CORRECTION CHARACTERS | Symbol characters used for error correction and detection, calculated automatically from the other symbol characters. |
| ERROR-CORRECTION LEVEL | An indicator of the number of characters used in a symbology for error correction. A higher level of error correction allows for correcting greater potential symbol damage. |
| ERROR DETECTION | This occurs when error-correction characters detect that the presence of errors in the symbol exceeds the error correction capacity, and keeps the symbol from being decoded as erroneous data. |
| ERROR-DETECTION CHARACTERS | Symbol characters reserved for error detection that are calculated automatically from the other symbol characters. |
| ERROR RATE | The number of errors divided by the number of transactions. |
| ESD | Electrostatic discharge usually a measure of a products ability to withstand damage from external electric shocks. |
| ETHERNET | A local area network used for connecting computers, printers, workstations, terminals, servers, and so on, within the same building or campus. Ethernet operates over twisted wire and over coaxial cable at speeds up to 100 Mbps, with 1 Gbps speeds coming soon. |
| EXTENDED CODE 39 | By using two barcode characters to represent one ascii character, the Code 39 barcode can be used to encode a richer number of characters, including ascii control codes and lower case letters. The Code 39 specification remains the same, but the bar code readers must be programmed to interpret the decoding in a different way. |
| EXTRANET | An intranet that allows restricted access to the outside world. |
